Asian Youth in Action (AYA) Kicks Off the Summer!

AYA youth and staff after a three day retreat in Hunter, NY.
After weeks of preparation and recruitment, AYA held its annual retreat in Hunter Mountain! We welcomed our new youth members and volunteers with three days of teambuilding activities, outdoor fun, and intensive workshops on Asian American history, gender issues, policing, and CAAAV history. We are proud to have eleven new youth in our program!
During the summer, our youth meet three times a week to learn about issues facing our community, conduct youth exchanges with other organizations, facilitate Know Your Rights trainings on interactions with law enforcement, outreach to different neighborhoods in the city, and create a documentary on policing in Asian and Asian American communities in NYC.

Here’s a description of the short films from the AAIFF website:
What does it mean to be Asian American living in America? This program of short films tell five distinct stories from a Japanese American youth in internment camp to Pakistani American Muslims living in California to undocumented North Korean refugees to Korean Americans today seeking
representation on screen.

CAAAV is being honored by the Urban Justice Center’s Community Development Project!
The Community Development Project (CDP) of the Urban Justice Center strengthens the impact of grassroots organizations in New York City’s low-income and other excluded communities. They partner with community organizations to win legal cases, publish community-driven research reports, assist with the formation of new organizations and cooperatives, and provide technical and transactional assistance in support of their work towards social justice. UJC’s CDP has been a partner in our work for the past 10 years. On Sept. 14th, UJC will hold their annual fundraiser event where CAAAV will be receive an award. We hope you can join us and support UJC.
We hope to see you at our events!
In solidarity,
-CAAAV Staff
